Winners of the 11th annual Consulting-Specifying Engineer Product of the Year awards included mobile applications that allow engineers to perform tasks wirelessly, a magnetic bearing water-cooled chiller, and an all-in-one variable frequency drive that combines induction and permanent magnet motors. Each of the following winning innovations has been designed to increase efficiency and improve system quality.

The Variable Twin Turbo (VTT) series of oil-free, variable-speed, magnetic bearing centrifugal compressors feature IntraFlow technology—a technology for improving compressor efficiency and providing an extended stable operating range while simplifying capacity control. The compressors are available with nominal capacity ranges from 200 to 350 tons for applications between 380 and 460 V as well as 575 V. Magnetic bearing chiller

The 1,500-ton capacity Daikin Magnitude magnetic bearing water-cooled chiller is designed to create climate-controlled environments for offices, data centers, K-12 schools, colleges, hospitals, and health care facilities. Developed to improve performance and reliability and reduce service requirements, the compressor features a single rotating component—the compressor shaft—levitated on a magnetic field. Because the Magnitude magnetic bearing chiller has few moving parts, and requires no oil nor oil-circulation equipment, it therefore requires less maintenance and service. The overall life of the equipment is estimated at 20 to 25 years.

ABB’s new circuit monitoring system sensor portfolio has been extended with sensors that measure currents up to 160 amps and also can be installed in almost every environment with any kind of product. The system consists of a control unit and sensors with different measurement ranges and mounting options. Up to 64 sensors can be connected to each control unit. The sensors are linked to the control unit via a flat cable. Measurement data enable remote access from a Modbus system via a RS485 Modbus RTU interface.

Nonmetallic coupling for indoor and outdoor applications

The T&B Fittings Non-Metallic Expansion/Deflection Coupling from Thomas & Betts (T&B) is designed to improve safety and reduce installation time for joining rigid polyvinylchloride (PVC) conduits. The flexible connection of PVC conduit resists moisture ingress and stress caused by movement at structural joints. Eaton’s arc-resistant low-voltage switchgear technology is designed to extend Type 2B arc-resistant ratings with the instrument and breaker secondary door open. The A800 series all-in-one variable frequency drive (VFD) combines traditional induction and permanent magnet motors into a single solution, providing high-performance response and energy-efficient motor control. The A800 meets the growing need among original equipment manufacturers, end users, and system integrators for a multiple-capacity VFD.
